All Things Edgar Allan Poe: Adaptations, Podcasts, Graphic Novels, and More
The New York Public Library
Have you already read through the extensive collection of short stories and poems by Poe? I know that when I was in middle school, I carried around the gigantic collected works from class to class and perused the pages in my downtime. Sometimes an author leaves us wanting more. Well, if you are a Poe fan wanting a little extra, we have the list for you. Below, we have compiled a list of fun adaptations and homages to the gifted author. Take some time this October to treat yourself to the creepy king.
Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Gareth Hinds. Purchase
Gareth Hinds` graphic novel adaptation of Poe is a new way to bring the author`s work to life. Featuring famous titles such as "The Cask of Amontadillo," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Raven," Hinds has taken artistic liberty to put a new spin on the chilling tales. Perfect for introducing young readers or as a gift for the bibliophile in your life, this graphic novel is a great way to experience Poe.
"The Death of Poe" - Stuff You Missed in History Class. Listen
This podcast is by far my favorite historical source, and their episode "The Death of Poe" does not disappoint. The strange life and death surrounding Poe are almost as fun as the works themselves. The death of Poe is long debated and theorized by scholars, readers, and pop culture alike. The hosts of SYMHC bring up some interesting points about the life and death of this cherished American author.
Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) directed by Robert Florey. Watch
Murders in the Rue Morgue is an early film adaptation of Poe`s namesake detective story by director Robert Florey. Featuring Bela Legosi a year after his successful Dracula, Legosi plays a mad scientist who injects women with ape blood to create a mate for his sideshow. The film takes a lot of artistic liberties in transforming Poe`s story, but it`s considered a cult classic horror film.
The Poe Museum - Richmond, Virginia. Visit
Located in the birth town of Edgar Allan Poe, The Poe Museum is an interesting spot in the oldest colonial house in Richmond. What started out as a measly shrine has now expanded to a house and an "enchanted" garden. You can even meet the Poe Museum Cats, two black cats found in the garden as kittens that have grown up on the grounds. The museum has opened its doors now for almost a hundred years, and Poe actually did guard the home when Lafayette stayed at this location after the Revolution.
Why Should You Read Edgar Allan Poe? - Scott Peepies, TED Ed, Youtube
This short but poignant video is a great way to introduce readers new to Poe. The narrator walks through the literary style and technique of Poe that merit him a literary classic. The illustrations of this video are just as creepy as the stories themselves and capture the essence of the author.
